Share A Story and a Cup…

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of The Folger Coffee Company. The opinions and text are all mine.

With Veterans Day approaching I am reminded of how appreciative I am to the veterans in my own life and to all of our nation’s veterans.

When I think about them and what they have sacrificed for all of us I want to do so much more than say thank you.

I am blessed to be able to celebrate my favorite veteran, my husband John on Veterans Day and in fact every morning with a cup of our favorite coffee, Folgers. There is no better way to start our day and nothing as inspiring as listening to him share his stories. I can’t help but hear the jingle in my mind every morning as the rich aroma fills our home. The best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup…

Our morning routine became a tradition after John shared with me the story of how while recovering from injuries, he worked at the base café’ serving coffee and donuts. That is where he first fell in love with the taste of Folgers. Seeing him smile as he talked about how grumpy the troops were, when they walked into the café and how quickly just a simple sip of coffee brought an instant smile to their faces is heartwarming.

This Veteran’s Day I will be headed to Walmart to stock up on Folgers as we are planning on getting together at our local VA center to celebrate the veterans who are far from home this year. I’m looking forward to sharing a cup and a story with them. They are always so grateful but we want them to know how much we enjoy spending time with them and hearing their personal stories.

As often as possible I invite a dear friend over for afternoon coffee. She is a military wife as well as a military mom. She is so proud of her husband and son and I always want her to know I am proud of her and want to celebrate her sacrifices as well as being grateful to her husband and son. Is there anything better late in the day than a savory cup of coffee and a quiet story shared with a good friend to give us the energy to get through our busy evenings with our families?

I was lucky to be raised by another honored veteran, my father Frank. Pouring him a cup a coffee in the afternoon is always an opportunity to sit with him as he shares story after story of his time traveling in the Mediterranean aboard a naval aircraft carrier. Those moments with him always remind of my childhood when our entire family would gather at my grandparent’s house to welcome my uncle and his family home from oversees.

My cousins, siblings and I would spread out all over the living room floor to play board games and share our own stories while the adults gathered at the large dining room table to drink coffee and share military life stories and catching up.

I will never forget how special I felt or how good it tasted when I would run up to my Grandfather and he would let me have a sip of coffee from his cup. “Don’t tell your Mom,” he would whisper. These days it’s my grandchildren that run up to me at the dining room table asking for a sip of coffee from my cup.

How great is it that something as simple as a good cup of coffee can trigger the happiest childhood memories, remind people that are far from their loved ones of home and can make a veteran feel honored and celebrated on Veterans Day.

Walmart and Folgers are committed to bringing our Veterans, their stories and a good cup of coffee together with their Share a Cup and a Story Program to go beyond saying thank you.

This year for Veterans Day head over to Walmart to buy some Folgers coffee for your favorite veteran and enjoy a cup and a story with them to go along with your thank you. Encourage a friend to join you.
